These days it’s missing in politics, dare I say, also in religion, but hey, maybe I can find it in these beans: Ethics! (rim-shot)
This vacuum-sealed bag of grinds has a minimalist look that speaks right to the heart of hip Gen-Z, so I expect it’ll taste just as bitter (rim-shot). I’m on a roll.
Having broken the seal, the fresh grinds mix with the hot Los Angeles summer air and smell just like coffee. Nothing special. Following the instructions on the side of the bag, I brew a batch in my french press.
A swirl of hot water over the grinds emits an aroma of coffee, again nothing special. I’m sensing a theme. My first sip is chocolatey on the back of the tongue. As I keep chugging, chocolate is the front flavor of this brew. Not a sweet, but dark chocolate, with the slightest bitter bite.
The rest of the batch went down just the same, only growing slightly sourer toward the pot’s end. Perhaps that’s the effect Dan spoke of in my previous Coffee Science post? I’d say, these beans are as plain as the bag they come in and… nothing special (rim-shot, comedy rule of 3’s). The effort put into sourcing, packaging, and tracking is admirable and “Ethical.” Still, I can’t say it makes for a better-tasting cup-o-joe.
