For anyone that’s been reading me for a while, there’s no surprise that I’ve been excited about the upcoming Foo Fighters album. Well, it was released today and does not disappoint.
In the past year band leader Dave Grohl lost both his bandmate Taylor Hawkins and mom Virginia Grohl. The album’s songs reflect on loss, acceptance and moving forward, with warm sweetness and some of the most sonically brutal tones I’ve ever heard from the band. It’s a turn-up the volume to eleven and let it wash over you kind of album. The bigger the speakers, the more this music will literally move you.
Listen to it anywhere you get new music: But Here We Are
Two movies are currently in theaters that I recommend checking out.
With studios pushing films to streaming platforms, there are increasingly shorter theater runs. So catch both these films before they’re downsized to your phone.
First, as a writer, I was caught off guard when a friend invited me to see the new Julia Louis-Dreyfus film, You Hurt My Feelings. I won’t spoil the film, but I will say if any part of your life revolves around creativity, this film hits hard. It’s a passionate, funny, mature look at how artists create and deal with personal criticism and relationships. The thing I appreciated most was how relaxed the pace of the film was, making sure never to pander or sacrifice the character’s intentions for a joke. A great date movie and a sure-fire hit if you’re tired of theaters showcasing Superheroes and Robots on their screens.
If superhero movies ARE your thing, or you enjoy dazzling theater experiences, see Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse. The reviews say this film is better than the last, and that’s a big promise. The original had some of the most amazing animation I’ve seen in years, mixing media and style with precision storytelling.
Add to that, this new film features a multitude of “spider-heroes.” The film’s writer/producers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (both huge supporters of the Disability Film Challenge), made sure to cast voice actors with disabilities. With the promise of stunning visuals and a top-notch cast - put extra butter on your popcorn so you don’t choke on all the twists and turns the film is sure to take.
