Judy Heumann, Rest in Peace
As you may or may not know, much of the work I do in film/tv production involves equity inclusion for people with disabilities within the industry. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting amazing people and making a lot of friends who have a disability. This community of people wouldn't be as strong as it is today if it weren’t for a small group of passionate activists who, in the late 60’s and 70’s, fought for equality and change. One of the spearheads of the movement Judy Heumann, passed away last weekend. A fierce, intelligent, funny person, her passing is heartbreaking for anyone who knew or admired her accomplishments.
If you’ve never heard of Judy, I encourage you to watch the award-winning documentary on Netflix called Crip Camp or read either of her books to learn what we are all capable of if we put our minds to it. It’s never too late to change the world for the better. And lest you think disability is of no concern to you, know this: On a long enough timeline, we will all, no matter gender, race, or income, become disabled.
