I’m spending the week in Ojai. While wandering the Thursday Farmer’s Market, my coffee chakra suddenly fell from alignment. It was the universe telling me I needed fresh beans. Panicked, I scanned the booths of farm fresh produce, gluten-free bread, and organic honey for cosmic signs of salvation. That’s when a shining aura emanating from the Bonito bean booth beckoned me. I asked the caffeine doula which of her roasts would best heal my demitasse distortion. “Sounds like a job for the Dark Beetle,” she replied. Like a fiend, I paid, tossed the bag into my organic, sustainable grocery sack, and scurried off to brew a pot.
Tearing open the reusable seal, the medium-colored beans are fragrant, like perfectly so. There’s something mystical I can’t quite put my nose on… is it nuts, a field of wheat, toast? Am I having a stroke? Mixed with hot water, the aroma blossomed like a lotus flower whispering all will be well before a drip ever touched my lips.
Anointed with a splash of cream, the first sip is smooth, balanced, and slightly nutty. A touch of bitterness turns sweet, like a yoga pose held longer than expected. Overall my flavor journey through the French press was as blissful as an uninterrupted meditation. If you’re ever in the region and want to increase your Karma, this grind will heal your inner child. Namaste.
